Use of ClassVR in foreign language teaching

At the Secondary Vocational School, Prague 5, Drtinova 3/498, they tried virtual reality with the ClassVR system in language teaching as well. This system offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the environment of the country and language they are studying. They started from the simplest activities, such as describing a picture and conducting interviews at a specific location. But he is already thinking about how to further use the glasses for easier mediation of everyday situations in teaching, or for greater involvement in the teaching of reality. As part of supporting the development of pupils' information literacy and digital competences, they also plan for pupils to create simulations themselves.

To a certain extent, they learned the system by themselves, only the introductory instructional training was sufficient, where they became familiar with the technical side of the system, the basic operation of the glasses (switching the glasses on and off) and the basic control of the program (searching and assigning activities).

Through virtual reality, students can interactively get to know real situations, practice vocabulary and communication in a foreign language in an environment that corresponds to their level of knowledge. Considering that some pupils are sensitive to the image in the glasses, and also some do not maintain their attention for a long time, it is necessary to plan the activity for a shorter time, or to include breaks during the work, when the pupils put the glasses away and discuss what they saw. But alternating activities and methods should be a natural part of a well-planned lesson. Anyway, this approach using VR not only increases the motivation to learn, but also supports the development of their language skills.
